In a different auction, we won two sterling silver cups. See below. The auction house described them as:

Two Tiny Sterling Silver Baby Cups

Item Description
This is a nice pair of two tiny cups that look like they go together but have different designs and makers. One is marked to identify Manchester Sterling, 885. The other is Sterling by Frank M Whiting & Company, 500.

Nice used condition, I've cleaned them up a little, I expect they will clean up more.

Actually, this is an example of the auction house being totally clueless... or possibly dishonest. By definition, sterling silver is 92.5 percent silver. Anything else and it's not sterling.

Now, do you see that number "500" in the second photo? That's the silver content, in thousandths, of the cup's alloy. In other words, this cup is 50 percent silver. It ain't sterling and the auction house should be calling it a "Tiny Sterling Silver Baby Cup."

Similarly, the second cup is marked "885". It's 88.5 percent silver. Still not sterling.

Finally, it was either lazy or dishonest of the auction house to describe the cups as "tiny" but not give the weight or dimensions of the tiny cups. Usually you see rulers alongside silver lots that haven't been weighed. If not a ruler, then they could put a quarter into the photo. Anything to give the viewer a frame of reference. But here, there's nothing. Even the background is generic!

I won the lot for $21, bidding based on my experience and the auction house having used the phrase "baby cups." But they could be smaller than baby cups. They COULD be Monopoly pieces! LOL. I'm gambling that the .885 cup weighs at least 28 grams. I think that's a good bet. Anything heavier than that is profit.

Then there's the 50% cup. More profit.

Several lots of golf balls sold tonight, but not to me. One lot of 103 balls sold for $1.00 while another lot of 36 balls in egg cartons sold for $4.00. The bidding doesn't always make sense. Then again, maybe there was something different about the egg carton balls. Or someone just wanted the cartons.

We won two ladies' fur caps, one mink and the other unknown, for $5.00. One or both came from a NY 5th Ave shop named Peck & Peck that closed its stores in the '70s and '80s. We hope we can incorporate the mink cap into a men's Ushanka hat if we find a design. Or maybe we can just see how these hats are made and use what we learn in the larger Ushanka.
