I just want to be the first one to mention Etherium on this forum.

I'll note (but can't prove, thanks to Bob) that I was the first one here to mention bitcoin, back when it was worth about $5.00.

Tonight's High School Talent Show
By: Decomposed

Msg. 44185 of 47202

I just got back from a talent show at the High School up the road. It has nothing to do with my son's old school which is in a different town. I was just bored and going to a local show was something to do. All things considered, it might have been worth the three dollars I paid. Or not.

I will say this: It was a JAM PACKED theater. Really crowded. When my son's old school had its talent show around four years ago, I think twenty people showed up.

The most entertaining part for me was the sit-down comic who might have given ribit a run for his money. He calls himself "Pegasus." Could be the next Henny Youngman for all we know. He was THAT good. I have no idea why he's dressed up as a marshmallow. http://youtu.be/Qwu5MBUKmwI

The biggest disappointment may have been the winner. Oh, he was sensational, but he also wasn't a student. Somehow, it seems a bit unfair to pit a bunch of 15 year olds against a 50 year old semi-professional singer. This social studies teacher has had years of formal voice training and was the lead in recent productions of Jesus Christ Superstar, Les Miserables and The Secret Garden. He was deservedly embarrassed to have won and, imo, should have declared himself ineligible before ever stepping on the stage.

What, though, of the student who took second place - who essentially won this talent show of HIGH SCHOOLERS? You must see it to believe it. My take is that if EVER there was a gal in desperate need of being bent over Daddy's knee while he tans her hide, this is the one. He should have done it about five years ago, though. Now, she's just another screwed up chick - but that's only my take. Your mileage may vary. http://youtu.be/F-j8fNNzd04

Conservative icon Walter Williams passes away at 84

by TheRightStuff.com

It’s just been reported that conservative icon Walter Williams passed away last night at age 84. Reaction is pouring in:

Williams was still writing columns as late as last month. Here’s his latest column called “Blacks of yesteryear and today”:

I was a teenager, growing up in the Richard Allen housing project of North Philadelphia, when Emmett Till was lynched in Money, Mississippi, on Aug. 28, 1955, and his brutalized, unrecognizable body later recovered from the Tallahatchie River.

From 1882-1968, 4,743 lynchings occurred in the United States. Roughly 73%, or 3,446, were Black people, and 27%, or 1,297, were white people.

Many whites were lynched because they were Republicans who supported their fellow Black citizens and opposed the lawless act of lynching. Tuskegee University has the best documentation of lynching. It records an 1892 high of 69 whites and 161 blacks lynched. By the 1940s, occurrences of lynching fell to single digits or disappeared altogether.

At the time of my youth, today’s opportunities for socioeconomic advancement were nonexistent for Black people. For all but a few, college attendance was out of the question because of finances and racial discrimination.

If you were not admitted to the Black colleges of Lincoln University or Cheyney State College, forget about college. I do not know of any student of my 1954 class at Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin High School who attended college.

Though the quality of education at Benjamin Franklin is a mere shadow of its past, today, roughly 17% of its graduating class has been admitted to college. The true hope for a youngster graduating from high school during the 1950s was a well-paying and steady job. My first well-paying job was as a taxi driver for Yellow Cab Company.

Younger Black people today have no idea of and have not experienced the poverty and discrimination of earlier generations. Also, the problems today’s Black people face have little or nothing to do with poverty and discrimination.

Political hustlers like to blame poverty and racism while ignoring the fact that poverty and racism were much greater yesteryear, but there was not nearly the same amount of chaos.

The out-of-wedlock birth rate among Blacks in 1940 was about 11%. Today, it is 75%. Black female-headed households were just 18% of households in 1950, as opposed to about 68% today.

In fact, from 1890 to 1940, the Black marriage rate was slightly higher than that of whites. Even during slavery, when marriage was forbidden, most Black children lived in biological two-parent families.

In New York City, in 1925, 85% of Black households were two-parent households. A study of 1880 family structure in Philadelphia shows that three-quarters of Black families were two-parent households.

There’s little protest against the horrible and dangerous conditions under which many poor and law-abiding Black people must live. It is not uncommon for 50 Black people to be shot over a weekend in Chicago — not by policemen, but by other Black people.

About 7,300 Black people are murdered each year, and not by white people or racist cops, but mostly by other Black people. These numbers almost make our history of victimization by racist lynching look like child’s play.

The solutions to the many problems that Black Americans face must come from within our Black communities. They will not come from the political arena. Blacks hold high offices and dominate the politics in cities such as Philadelphia, Detroit, Baltimore, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and New Orleans. Yet, these are the very cities with the nation’s worst-performing schools, highest crime rates, high illegitimacy rates, weak family structure and other forms of social pathology.

I am not saying that Blacks having political power is the cause of these problems. What I am saying is the solution to most of the major problems that confront Black people will not be found in the political arena or by electing more Blacks to high office.

One important step is for Black Americans to stop being “useful tools” for the leftist, hate-America agenda. Many Black problems are exacerbated by guilt-ridden white people. Often, they accept behavior and standards from Black people that they would not begin to accept from white people.

In that sense, white liberal guilt is a form of disrespect in their relationships with Black Americans. By the same token, Black people should stop exploiting the guilt of whites. Let us all keep in mind that history is one of those immutable facts of life.

Walter Williams will be sorely missed. But he has gone on to his eternal reward and I’m sure it’s quite heavenly. Please say a prayer for him today.

Walter Williams is an American ICON and should, like Thomas Sowell, be accorded their rightful respected places in American Scholar circles...

Here is where I and Dr. Williams disagree.

The MONEY that was FORCEFULLY and without MY CONSENT STOLEN from my paycheck for whatever purposes, regardless of those purposes, was still MY MONEY. I earned it.\

It was taken from me without my consent or approval. I had NO SAY in that matter and yet, it came from MY EARNINGS.

Hence it belonged to me and theoretically still does.

I am not duped. I am not ignorant. I know FDR played a PONZI scheme on America and many were thinking to themselves that they will benefit from the backs of others, free money syndrome....

Yes, Social Security is a massive PONZI Scheme Bernie Madoff can only dream about...

That does not mean I am blind to it or agree with it.

What does Dr. WIlliams suggest I as a citizen do about it?? Beside call me names and describe me as "duped"?

He is right until the very end....

GOT a solution that works out for us I would love to hear it Dr. Williams????

It IS MY MONEY. I should be able to tell you to the DIME how much of my money was taken from me without my consent and used for whatever purpose the Federal government wanted to use it for. We allknow the criminal politicians stole it and used it to pay for their over spending and sticking our noses every where in the world we did not belong. Or giving it away like they earned it, to every nation on earth... and redistributing it to anyone and everyone they thought needed it.....

Question for all?

Did Dr. Williams and Jefferson and Madison also mean that tax money should NOT be used to send to help States out with nature's calamities and that States should take care of those issues on their own level???

I am a bit unclear on that.....

Anyway, I find it a bit offensive that Dr. Williams has ascribed willful ignorance (duped) to most of us regarding the theft by government, started by FDR (DEMOCRAT LIBERAL), of money from our earnings for redistribution known as social security AND that the money was not really ours....

One point we have to agree to disagree....

Otherwise, brilliant as ever....

Sarepta’s surprise FDA approval for rare disease drug excites investors

Shares of the biopharmaceutical jumped 35% after the Vyondys53 approval was announced Thursday evening

by Jaimy Lee
Marketwatch.com

The Food and Drug Administration’s out-of-the-blue approval of Sarepta Therapeutics’ second Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) drug sent the company’s stock soaring on Friday.

Shares of Sarepta SRPT, +35.92% jumped 35% in morning trading after Thursday evening’s Vyondys 53 approval.

DMD is a rare disorder that mainly affects male children. About 8% of the children who have DMD have the gene mutation that Vyondys 53 treats.

The “Vyondys 53 approval removes a major overhang for the stock as concerns surrounding the future SRPT’s commercial products such as Exondys 51 being pulled from the market and cash flows required to support SRPT’s growing gene therapy platforms have now been lifted,” SVP Leerink’s Joseph Schwartz wrote on Dec. 12.

Sarepta already markets Exondys 51, which was the first FDA-approved DMD treatment in 2016. And until now, it has been the company’s only commercialized therapy, bringing in $99 million in sales in the third quarter, up from $78 million in the same period a year ago.

Until Aug. 19, when the regulator sent a complete response letter to the company citing a pair of risk concerns about the then experimental therapy, it was expected that Vyondys 53 would follow the same accelerated pathway as Exondys 51. The company’s stock tumbled 18% to $120.31 that day and has since failed to recover to its year-to-date high of $156.91 on July 15. The stock closed Thursday at $100.47. Company officials said they were surprised by the letter at that time.

“In the span of four months, we commenced and completed the formal dispute resolution process culminating in the grant of our appeal, resubmitted our [new drug application] and obtained an approval–a great benefit to DMD patients awaiting treatment,” Sarepta president and CEO Doug Ingram said in a news release.

A Sarepta spokeswoman said Exondys51 and Vyondys53 both have an annual list price of approximately $300,000. However, pharmacy benefit manager Prime Therapeutics told The New York Times in 2017 that the price can sometimes reach $750,000 per patient, in part because it is weight-based.

That price tag has raised questions among experts even though there are limited treatment options for DMD patients. The Institute for Clinical and Economic Review, a watchdog that conducts comparative clinical effectiveness research, said in August that most insurers have responded to the high price of Exondys 51 by narrowing coverage. “Three years after approval, the manufacturer has provided no high-quality evidence of benefit, many patients and families are surely losing out, and only the manufacturer truly benefits from this deplorable situation,” ICER chief medical officer David Rind said in a statement then.

Sarepta is also developing casimersen, another experimental DMD treatment that is expected to receive an FDA decision in the first half of next year. But not all analysts believe that the approval of Vyondys 53 bodes well for the FDA’s take on casimersen and other DMD medications in the industry pipeline.

“While the approval of [Vyondys 53] provides some alleviation to the P&L’s operational burn, we remain cautious of the next steps for development both for the PMO and gene therapy franchise,” wrote Oppenheimer analyst Hartaj Singh.

Investors are less cautious. Shares of Wave Life Sciences WVE, +2.67%, which is developing a DMD treatment, are up 6%. Audentes Therapeutics BOLD, +0.04%, which Astellas Pharma announced last week that it planned to buy for $3 billion, is also working on a DMD drug. Its stock was flat.

Sarepta’s stock has gained 25% year-to-date, while the S&P 500 SPX, +0.06% is up about 26%.

I believe this is from the Californica wildfires . . .
What bothers me, is that ALL the houses are burnt
down, but many trees, grass, and one shed are
not burnt out.

I'm guessing that the houses were all built of stuff that
burns quick and easy . . . while the trees must have some
natural resistance to fire? And I have to wonder what
that shed was made of.

What percent of Christians identify themselves as liberal and what percent as conservative?

Jonathan Andersen, United Methodist Pastor
Answered Aug 9 2011
A percentage would be impossible to calculate. However, as Christianity continues to grow in the Majority World it is largely in forms of evangelicalism and is trending towards theological conservatism.

Some resources that may be helpful:
