Texas Supreme Court Denies Benefits for Same-Sex Marriages
The Texas Supreme Court ruled Friday there is no established right to government spousal benefits in same-sex marriages. The case, decided by an all-Republican court, arose from then-Houston Mayor Annise Parker’s decision in 2013 to grant benefits to same-sex spouses of city employees who had married in other states. Though the U.S. Supreme Court established the right to same-sex marriage in 2015, state courts are able to decide the “reach and ramifications” of the ruling. Supporters of gay marriage say they will appeal, arguing the U.S. Supreme Court granted equal treatment for same-sex marriages.
