I'm just about finished with my latest book, "The Boys in the Boat", by Daniel Jame Brown.

It's about the team from University of Washington that won the eight-ored rowing Gold Medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The book focuses on the life of one of the young men, Joe Rantz, who came from a very poor family who had to fend for himself during the Great Depression from the age of 14 when his father's new wife threw him out of the house because she didn't want him around to remind his father of his deceased first wife. He managed to stay in school while working first as a lumberjack and the later as a stone mason. He finally graduated and saved enough money to go to the university in Seattle and there he joined the rowing team. The book goes through the three years that Joe worked to make the varsity team that eventually represented the US at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.

The book I finished a few weeks ago was titled "All the Gallant Men", by Donald Stratton, the only book about the sinking of the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor actually written by one of the survivors. At the time the book was published, he was one of only five men still alive who had been on the USS Arizona on December 7, 1941.

Reviews; 2 books & a movie

Last week I read “Small Great Things” a novel by Jodi Picoult.
She tackles the subtly of race & the huge impact it has on people, both white & those of color.

Ruth is a Black nurse on the maternity floor, she's been on the job for 20 years & is great at it.
A white supremacist couple have their first child, a son, Davis, and don't want 'her' or anyone of color touching their son. (she's the only Black nurse on the floor)
Its complicated, but Davis dies & Ruth is the only nurse in the room at the time.

The author is thoughtful, provocative & takes several surprising turns. Its an awesome book, with an amazing ending!

Yesterday I started 'The Fix' the latest by David Baldacci.
I enjoy his books, and he has a repeat character, detective Amos Decker, in some of them. Decker is back!
He's unusual, was in the NFL for a short time, he was injured. His injury gives him total recall & a memory that holds on to every detail.
Another page turner ;)

Went to see 'The Big Sick' yesterday.
Based on a true story, a Pakistani man falls in love with a white woman. Besides wanting their son to become a doctor, (he's a comedian) they want him to marry a Pakistani.
Interesting movie, with comedy & cultural differences worth exploring.
We enjoyed it.
