Here is just an idea fwiw.

On yer land in N.H., do you have any xtra space?

Reason I am asking, is Nemo could likely join you up there in the great outdoors and you would have someone near that can fix a lot of things. You might be a big help to each other. He could also help ya a lot iffen ya ever had a need to protect the farm/ranch/homestead as he already knows how to use firearms....

I think it could be a great match! Plus, I bet Nemo is good at growing food plants already.....

Just thinking ahead in yer best interests of course.... and Nemo's also....

Thanks for the kind words.

re: "You're retiring early?"

At the first opportunity, yes.

Since I think a monetary collapse is coming to America and the world, it would be stupid to not prepare for it. I can't stay in Virginia living a conventional life until the crisis hits and wipes me out, so it's time to go.

I need to get serious about growing and preserving my own food and learning how to separate myself from the grid. I don't intend to leave the grid prematurely and will continue to use oil, electricity, hospitals and store merchandise as long as I can, but I want to start making a serious effort to prepare. It would be nice to be able to get by in a crisis where the above essentials might not be available.

I won't be retiring in the conventional sense. I probably won't take many vacations, and I'll still be working - but for myself, not for society or the tax collector. On the other hand, I think I'll thoroughly enjoy it.

I'm toying mentally with the thought of blogging my efforts to become self-sustainable, but I'm not sure if I want them made public. And, with all the mistakes I'll be making, it would probably be pretty funny as well as educational to anyone else in a similar boat. What do I know about living in the country, after all? Not much... For a few years at least, I'll be a real life Oliver Wendell Douglas.
