First, McAuliffe said that attendees had semi-automatic weapons, not automatic weapons. There's a world of difference. The $60 Marlin .22 rifle I bought when i was a kid was semi-automatic. Automatics, on the other hand, are pretty tightly regulated. I could get one, but it might run me $15,000 and would open me up to all sorts of unwanted attention and "inspections" (aka "searches.)
Second, you aren't giving legal gun holders much credit. We can draw our weapon when we believe someone's life is on the line. But a FIGHT is probably not sufficient reason, in jurors' eyes, to kill a person.
In my experience, those who carry guns legally are remarkable responsible people. Otherwise, you'd be right.
