That's impressive. When I took French in high school, there was a clear benefit to being there and having the teacher pronounce words and sentences and have you do it. You got a bit of the right accent. Maybe if they have a full class, they'll let him audit it, not go for a grade. Better to take the grade, though, since he did so well on the test.

One of the guys I worked with in the 70's was going on vacation to Japan, so he went out and learned the language and also how to read and I think write the script. That was awesome, he was a smart old guy. Good friend who has since passed away. When he took a trip, he took a trip!

... is tomorrow. UVA has a lot of activities going on today, though, including placement exams for students hoping to get into certain classes.

Joey had hoped to take Japanese 1 this semester. He's never been exposed to it though he's had an interest for years. Consequently, he's been studying Japanese on his own for a few months and cramming the last two weeks.

The teacher sent out a message yesterday that those interested in the class should take Monday's placement test. Joey took it this morning and . . . tested right out of the class! He made a single mistake, confusing "High school" for "Elementary school."

He says that if he doesn't take the class, he probably won't be able to take Japanese this semester at all. The Japanese 2 (or whatever it's called) class conflicts with his schedule. Due to the Placement Test result, he would get credit for Japanese 1 whether he takes the class or not.

I don't think he's too happy with that option. He says his vocabulary is apparently much larger than he thought, but he doesn't speak the language very well. He'll find out tomorrow what the teacher has to say and what his options are.
