There were reports early Thursday of explosions at a chemical plant in Crosby, about 30 miles northeast of downtown Houston.
Arkema, a French chemical group, said in a statement that there were two explosions around 2 a.m., and a risk of further blasts at the site.
The Arkema plant manufactures organic peroxides, which are used in making plastic and other materials. When the chemicals warm, they start to decompose, which creates more heat and can quickly lead to a rapid, explosive reaction. Some organic peroxides also produce flammable vapors as they decompose.
The plant was shut down last Friday in anticipation of the storm.
