re: "...ya gotta build up to 'long term survival'."

At work, I've found that there are quite a few guys who agree with me, in principle at least, that really bad times lie ahead. Not many of them are doing anything about it. The ones who are doing something live on farms. I have to say, they are generally much more prepared than I am.

Every so often, someone either hears me talking or sees the photos I've got on my wall, and asks me if I'm going to be totally off the grid when I retire. "Not if I can help it," is my usual response. "Nobody intelligent WANTS to live that way. I just want to improve my chances if I have to."

re: "Ya don't want to spend so much that ya can't survive UNLESS there is a disaster."

A very good point.

I think, though, that it's easier than people think to prepare for a disaster while also living cheap. Yes, there's an initial cash outlay. You should buy land, a house, gardening tools and, if the land is large, equipment. But you have to do some of that ANYWAY. Houses in suburbs tend to be more expensive than rural properties - not in every case, but in most. Once you don't need employment any longer, I don't see much excuse for staying in a place where you know you're going to be a sitting duck one day.

But then, I REALLY believe that TEOTWAWKI is going to happen. Most, it seems to me, only say they do.
