Kenya Court Nullifies President’s Election Victory
In a shock ruling, the Kenyan supreme court on Friday nullified last month’s presidential election results, which saw Uhuru Kenyatta elected to a second term.
The court, in a 4-2 ruling, called for a new election to take place within 60 days. A lawyer for Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga had asked that the court invalidate the election results based on certain anomalies in the forms used to count the votes. Odinga said the ruling made for “a very historic day for the people of Kenya and by extension the people of Africa.” Kenyatta’s lawyer, however, called the decision a “very political” one, but said the president would live with the consequences.
