Dear Linda,
After my divorce (Over thirty years ago now) I pledged
that I would not carry credit card debt. And, so far,
I have been successful at that.
I had to have a mortgage, but with a good credit rating
I had a low rate. Last time I bought a new vehicle
I got a zero percent interest rate.
I hear you on a fixed annuity for retirement . . .
But that is obozo's guaranteed two percent inflation
rate that is eroding your purchasing power. (That the
media refuses to recognize how much like highway robbery
that is appalls me.)
Which is why I have invested heavily in companies that
pay dividends - with a preference for companies with
a history of increasing their dividends. (See
'Dividend Aristocrats'.) Every dividend increase feels
like a 'pay raise' and they will be a key factor in my future happiness. (If I ever feel safe enough to actually retire.)

I'm finding for myself that high and increasing interest rates are what's clobbering me. The only inflationary item that is impacting me is food. Gas has come down a lot, but doesn't compensate. I have also reduced my meetings a lot, just going to those I deem most important.
Another Obama first, no SS cola. And the fortune 100 company I worked for has no cola forever on our pensions, which they call an annuity.
