They claim to have 180 mph storm windows.

Andrew had gusts measured at 200 mph before the anemometer blew off the building.

As I posted earlier, my prayers are with all in its path.

re: "For anyone interested, my brother and mother left Miami early this morning..."

My new-to-Florida brother and sister-in-law have a 10th floor condo overlooking a Ft Lauderdale waterway, and they are intent on riding the storm out. It's their first hurricane. I've tried to warn them, but to no avail.

I'm sure they'll survive. Hotels and tall buildings don't fall over in hurricanes, though the first three floors can certainly wash out. But while safe from the surge, at the 10th floor and higher the wind speed is much greater. They claim to have 180 mph storm windows. I'm not at all confident that that will be enough. I do know that hurricane-propelled 2x4s can fly right through cinder blocks if they have enough speed. There's no telling what sort of debris could sail straight at them if the eye hits Ft Lauderdale.

Hurricanes can spawn tornadoes, too - with winds potentially at 250mph or higher.

I do hope they'll take some good videos. Might as well get some entertainment out of what's likely to be a terrifying experience.

The view from their balcony (taken during a prior rainstorm):
