Nacl01,

My contention is pretty simple.

HIgher ground is always better if you live anywhere near a flood zone , a storm surge zone, a river, etc....

Do folks enjoy the shore? Of course! Me too!!!

Would I ever build a house next to one or near one?

NOPE. Maybe 100 miles away at the closest point on significantly higher ground and still would have to design it to withstand hurricane force winds.

And be equipped with an automatic generator that turns on when the electric cuts out within a few seconds and have enough gasoline to power it for a few weeks...

Well stocked deep freezers and extra refrigerator and plenty of survival food..... and water...

But that is just me........

Hurricane Andrew hit Homestead FL in 1992, but Miami didn't take too much damage.

I am not sure I would agree with that. My mother lives near SW 40 St in Miami and there was quite a lot of damage just south of there. South of Kendall Dr (SW 88 St) whole neighborhoods were wiped out.
