Despite the order of the messages, I wrote the response below before I saw your post. You did a good job of answering my main question.

What we're doing to prep is nobody else's business. Quite right. I talk about it too much.

I hope everybody gets ready for what is certain to happen. Then I hope they get ready for what MIGHT happen. Ideally, nothing bad ever happens to anyone.
That, of course, isn't how it usually works.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

Re: ”WHY DO YOU PREP?????“

There are lots of topics in that post of yours. Some are legit questions I've struggled with myself; others are based on a misunderstanding. For instance....

Re: ”"I don't think many people build with the knowledge that they will almost certainly be wiped out one day."

THAT should be the FIRST THING ANYONE thinks about....“

What makes you so sure that they don't? As I said, I don't think anyone builds with the knowledge (or belief) that they will be wiped out. That doesn't mean that they don't think about it and rule it out.

Re: ”Second thing they should do before starting to plant a bunch of shrubs, trees, etc. is to do a LAYOUT of your house and yard and make sure you allow plenty of space for trees branches to grow. In other words, not too close to the house as they will grow over and into it.“

I'm not sure if that was meant to be specific to my situation or if it is more general. Speaking for myself, I'm building in a field. There are no trees or shrubs, except for small ones that I'm cutting down, within a hundred feet of my barn and 200 feet of my house.

I need to find some good landscaping software to help me plan the layout. There are also some books I need to read. There are some excellent books on how to build a forest made largely of edible plants. Certain types of trees should be on its perimeter to protect the more delicate plants on the inside from both winds and critters. I don't know much about it but I hope to learn. You're definitely right that a tremendous amount of planning needs to go into it.

Re: ”WHY DO YOU PREP?????“

You know the answer. I've been addressing it on here for ten years. But you haven't answered my question. Why DON'T you take prepping against an economic collapse seriously? No one here does so far as I can tell except, perhaps, Nemo.

Or am I mistaken and the rest of you prep but don't talk about what you're doing? (Which would make you far smarter than me.)

Re: ”WHY did you BUY that land in New Hampshire?“

I'm unclear as to whether your emphasis is on the word "BUY" or on "in New Hampshire"?

I'll assume you're asking "Why...in New Hampshire."

I had several reasons.
o New Hampshire's government is less predatory than most.
o I had a builder there who I could trust. They aren't easy to find.
o It's beautiful.
o It's farmable.
o It's less expensive than most such places.
o It's far from large cities.

That last bullet is probably the most germane to this discussion in that it concerns the avoidance of an approaching disaster. If it weren't for what's coming, I'd rather be within 25 miles of a city. I definitely don't like the idea of an ambulance taking an hour to get to me if I ever have a heart attack or tractor accident... but, again, I think it's wise to consider the probability of disasters when making decisions like this. I may never have a tractor accident or heart attack, but I *WILL* have a retirement in which my money becomes worthless.

You guys know I'm right about this. I therefore don't really think you're being serious when you call it a "personal belief." It's certain. We just don't when it will begin to collapse (it already has), when it will become unbearable, or what form it will take.

Re: ”WHY on TOP of the property instead if AT the BOTTOM??“

I'm not building at the top. I'm building out of the trees but near the bottom of the field. It's essentially the middle of the hill, with trees covering the bottom quarter.

My view could be MUCH nicer if that were my goal, but I'm trying to be practical.

I'm not building at the BOTTOM because that would make me a sitting duck for anyone who wants to burglarize, rob or murder me. It's also difficult to manage a farm without living near to the crops and animals.

Re: ”See what I am saying??????“

If it's that people should plan, then yes I do. But I'm not convinced that those who live on the ocean, like my brother, haven't planned. Their circumstances and priorities are different than mine or yours. People who live in condos on the ocean are generally not without means.

Now, if you mean those who live half a mile away, then you could be right. But for that matter, why do people live in Chicago? Or in Sacramento? I can't for the life of me figure that out. Not many are in those places because of PLANNING. I think many people get trapped by their families, their jobs and their own laziness. I'm so happy I'm CHOOSING where to live and not being trapped into being some place that's not what I really want. For that matter, I'm happy to have lived long enough that I'll actually be able to make a few dreams come true. I've spent too long chasing a career. It's time to live for myself.

So there. I think I answered all of your questions. But you still haven't answered my main one: Are you making preparations for TEOTWAWKI? Or is your silence your answer?
