re: "...I also have a gps navigation system (garmin) and some kind of backup camera thingy."

I've been using GPSes since around 2000 - when I bought software and an antenna that plugged into my laptop. I used that GPS to get from California to Virginia in 2005. It was kind of nice in that I could bring it into my hotel rooms and look up pizza places were close enough to deliver. It also took me down a bunch of dirt roads and, once, onto a wooden suspension bridge. (I tried to shave some miles off the trip by bypassing Omaha Nebraska. BAD idea.)

I just bought dash cams and the "backup camera thingy" you mentioned, though I haven't yet received everything I ordered. I don't have the backup camera and I don't yet have the memory cards for the dash cams. I had to buy them separately. But once everything is set up, I'll post my opinion of both new gadgets.

My current GPS, btw, is a Magellan. I don't recommend it. Stay with Garmin. The Magellan is slow to boot and more difficult to use. It has a touch screen, but whenever I try to slide the image down to see what lies ahead, I manage to invert the display turning everything upside down. I still haven't figured out how to reverse that other than by rebooting. I was really surprised that the Magellan didn't have a "Take Me Home" option - which is a Garmin standard. I don't know what anyone would want to do more often with their GPS than to have it take them home, but the folks at Magellan apparently didn't find that to be worth considering. It's an unforgiveable oversight.

...with the garmin all ya have to do is plug it in to the lighter and stick it on the windshield. It has all the bells and whistles including gps. It knows where you are and what time it is. The motion sensor doesn't work if the motor isn't running cause the power outlet isn't hot.

...I also have a gps navigation system (garmin) and some kind of backup camera thingy. Oddly the Nissan truck I bought didn't have either built in. If I had it to do all over again I would have bought a Toyota which had it all built in.
