I recently had this very discussion with my son. "Gender" is one of those words like "hate," "gay," "fascism," "Nazi,"
that was commandeered by the left and turned into something other than what it was meant to be.
By the new definition, a "gender" is what ZHE PERCEIVES itself to be, which is not necessarily the same as the person's "sex."
Think I'm making this up? Take a look at definition #2 from DICTIONARY.COM. You won't find that sort of nonsense in your older dictionaries.
