De,

You too! I bought the laptop software after missing my hotel by two blocks and getting into one of the worst neighborhoods in DC. It was better than nothing, but it became a pain to carry the laptop around. I also found the software slightly counter-intuitive to use. I did have a problem with it, though. Once I went to a conference in DC, then headed for a friend's house to visit and go out to dinner. It had a tendency to overshoot and tell you to turn around. I decided to go where it told me and not question it, to see if it worked or not. It almost put me in another state. Don't know if it was the satellites or the laptop was overwhelmed (decent size cpu and memory at the time), but I moved on. By then, the prices on standalones came down a lot, too.

I ended up buying a Garmin, after looking at them in the store. Love it. Only complaint is the last mile sometimes gets a bit confusing. I think that's probably a factor of the satellites.

Agree the home button's an excellent feature. I read an article once that said put a nearby address in the home button so if you get robbed, they don't have a robber show up at your house while you're out on the road. I doubt that would come up....

re: "...I also have a gps navigation system (garmin) and some kind of backup camera thingy."

I've been using GPSes since around 2000 - when I bought software and an antenna that plugged into my laptop. I used that GPS to get from California to Virginia in 2005. It was kind of nice in that I could bring it into my hotel rooms and look up pizza places were close enough to deliver. It also took me down a bunch of dirt roads and, once, onto a wooden suspension bridge. (I tried to shave some miles off the trip by bypassing Omaha Nebraska. BAD idea.)

I just bought dash cams and the "backup camera thingy" you mentioned, though I haven't yet received everything I ordered. I don't have the backup camera and I don't yet have the memory cards for the dash cams. I had to buy them separately. But once everything is set up, I'll post my opinion of both new gadgets.

My current GPS, btw, is a Magellan. I don't recommend it. Stay with Garmin. The Magellan is slow to boot and more difficult to use. It has a touch screen, but whenever I try to slide the image down to see what lies ahead, I manage to invert the display turning everything upside down. I still haven't figured out how to reverse that other than by rebooting. I was really surprised that the Magellan didn't have a "Take Me Home" option - which is a Garmin standard. I don't know what anyone would want to do more often with their GPS than to have it take them home, but the folks at Magellan apparently didn't find that to be worth considering. It's an unforgiveable oversight.
