De!

Like You I too have been using a portable GPS for a very long time. I bought my first Garmin maybe 12 years ago...

I bought my one I use now about 3 years ago. I LOVE my Garmin. Only thing I wish they would do is enable VOICE ACTIVATED destinations and then show you route choices.

But hey, it is very accurate with auto update on maps for north America and all the places I wind up going to for business are always there. Great GPS.

My car has a built in one and I also have a downloaded APP on my cell phone called WAZE.
It's free for both Android and Apple.

It has a feature that if you get stuck in traffic or something, it can show you a detour around the mess and not sit in it...

It also shows you bottlenecks and construction ahead because other WAZE users have reported it and it shows up.

Nice APP to have on your cellular phone....

I just prefer looking at my Garmin.
Great choice!

re: "...I also have a gps navigation system (garmin) and some kind of backup camera thingy."

I've been using GPSes since around 2000 - when I bought software and an antenna that plugged into my laptop. I used that GPS to get from California to Virginia in 2005. It was kind of nice in that I could bring it into my hotel rooms and look up pizza places were close enough to deliver. It also took me down a bunch of dirt roads and, once, onto a wooden suspension bridge. (I tried to shave some miles off the trip by bypassing Omaha Nebraska. BAD idea.)

I just bought dash cams and the "backup camera thingy" you mentioned, though I haven't yet received everything I ordered. I don't have the backup camera and I don't yet have the memory cards for the dash cams. I had to buy them separately. But once everything is set up, I'll post my opinion of both new gadgets.

My current GPS, btw, is a Magellan. I don't recommend it. Stay with Garmin. The Magellan is slow to boot and more difficult to use. It has a touch screen, but whenever I try to slide the image down to see what lies ahead, I manage to invert the display turning everything upside down. I still haven't figured out how to reverse that other than by rebooting. I was really surprised that the Magellan didn't have a "Take Me Home" option - which is a Garmin standard. I don't know what anyone would want to do more often with their GPS than to have it take them home, but the folks at Magellan apparently didn't find that to be worth considering. It's an unforgiveable oversight.
