So I am not as totally inept at using html as I thought then? That is good news although I do admit I don't have much patience to really use all the features...

For good reason. It can't be done within the body of a post.
There's a single exception - the "Pre" tag (which works just like the "B" tag for bolding) will let you make a font smaller.

It's not very useful. It only works correctly the first time it is used. If you use it a second time in the same post, it even screws up the earlier text.
