Ipad-schmipad ... I use my laptop for this - good built in speakers, MUCH larger screen, better OS, keyboard and mouse - much easier to use - even if slightly more bulky.

First: For ALL video formats and audio formats

VLC Media Player - FREE/OpenSource - well maintained by large user base - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files, and various streaming protocols

Version 2.2.6 • Windows • 28 MB
78,057,901 downloads so far

Incredibly capable- nice playlist functions, can convert files, resample (save disk space), and has streaming capabilities also. I never use Win-Media Player any longer- this program FAR exceeds it and requires much less cpu to run it, and much easier to find maintain various 'mini-libraries'. Good for VIDEO and AUDIO files, both. Handles more formats than windows-media - with far less 'can't find codec' hassles. Plays DVD's/CD's (all of em) flawlessly.

Wikipedia ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VLC_media_player

You can find VLC documentation on VideoLAN's wiki website. http://wiki.videolan.org

If you are a newcomer to VLC media player, please read the Introduction to VLC media player. http://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation:VLC_for_dummies

You will find some information on how to use the player in the "How to play files with VLC media player" document.

For all the saving, converting, transcoding, encoding, muxing and streaming tasks, you should find useful information in the Streaming Documentation.

-----------

E-Book Reader - CALIBRE - FREE/Source Puvblicly Available
(They don't use the term OpenSource -so I won't either.)

calibre - E-book management
calibre: The one stop solution for all your e-book needs. Comprehensive e-book software.
Search domain calibre-ebook.comhttps://calibre-ebook.com

Handles ALL the e-book formats, including PDF files. Strong bookmarking, font-size control, easy library maintenance, VERY FULL FEATURED and easy to use and maintain. VERY FLEXIBLE.

------- BONUS for the 'audio impaired' amongst us, and those that bothered to read this far.

This is a piece of 'nagware' - the demo version runs forever, is limited, but can boost audio output 2x over the normal max - and has 3 preset 'frequency' enhancers. I find it GREATLY improves SPEECH characterics for me using one of the presets. In the demo version, it pops-up a nag screen, turns off (back on by dismissing nag screen) every 15 minutes. I actually find that USEFUL - letting my 'pooter run at night - the volume automatically goes down to 1/2 volume after 15 minutes - but stays on low volume - which improves my sleep.

Anyways: the program is DFX
http://www.fxsound.com/webapps/

I tried a BUNCH of 'sound amplifies' out there - this is the ONLY one that actually worked as advertised, simple to use (either on or off, select a preset, done).

I have run the above 3 programs for over 4 years- VLC and CALIBRE and DFX. They are like Windows 7 - solid, keeps on ticking - and will always be 'must have' programs for me.

A very big TIP OF THE HAT to my New Jersey friend for the above reco's. They were pure gold.

Final MUST have: IRFANVIEW - largest base of users in the world for viewing ANY IMAGE FILES - any format.
