re: " when some of them start to awaken, it creates some inner imbalance. "

Yes, I should think it would.

One of the vets interviewed in the PBS series spoke of how when he used to walk through the fields, knowing that every step could be his last, he used to look at his legs and wonder how it was that they even continued to function. He said he came to regard the very act of taking a step as being one of supreme courage.

Another spoke of hiding in the dark, reporting on the enemy by clicking the squelch button on his radio once or twice to communicate since the Viet Cong were so close that he could hear them speaking. He said that to this day, he has to have a night light in his room. His children don't understand and tease him for sleeping with it.

I am SO happy that I never had to go through that, and I continue to be fearful that one day they might just reinstate the draft and go after my boy.

I do believe that war has become easier for Americans since WWII. Losses and horrors certainly haven't been as extreme (on our side). I suspect that drones and robot soldiers will do most of the fighting one day. I also suspect it will happen in North America before too much longer. Hopefully not while I'm alive...

Thank You De!

I enjoy Ken Burns' work immensely. I own everything he has written and read it all. His documentaries such as this normally are very accurate.

I almost cannot bring myself to watch this series. Too close to home for me and I do not care to re-dig up a lot of memories I had put behind me some time ago...

It's really kind of interesting on a personal level, at least for myself as I do not speak for Ribit, that to have been there in the middle of it and only God allowed me to survive it, and then to come home and go to school, get employed and attend evening classes, marry and have children, that I have suppressed a lot of distant memories and sometimes, when some of them start to awaken, it creates some inner imbalance.

I think that is what happened to me when I was hit by the semi in 2014 and almost pushed off the bridge. I believe a lot of suppressed memories of the not so pretty images of war and battle were somehow renewed in my mind and allowed to affect my nervous system and psyche.

The great news is I am over that and have not had any recurrences in about six months. No meds of any kind either.

I do not know if I can re-visit emotionally that time without being affected and consequently, I do not believe I want to take that chance.. Therein is the quandary for me as I love so much Ken Burns' series on the Civil War that I am torn... But it is probably better for myself only that I don't. Some memories are simply better left in the distant past...

Thank you kindly though for your thoughtfulness.

I do hope everyone who watches it learns some things and can enjoy his great work.
