Look at the color and shape of the snake's head.

I would hope the other methods work because, if it comes down to looking closely at the shape of the snake's head I think it would be too late for the snake.

By the way, I am not the guy in Arizona who forgot an important step in bbqing the rattlesnake. I have seen in the cookbook where it says, "But first . . ."
