I've known three people who were killed while riding. One had broken his neck in an accident five years earlier. He wasn't so lucky the second time.
I had a small but street legal dirt bike when I was in college. I got rid of it after a few close calls, the worst being something I didn't even see. A car pulled alongside me at a light (a major road in Sacramento) and the driver told me that the car behind me had changed into my lane and missed me by about a foot.
As close as that. My life would have been over. I was smart enough to throw in the towel on road bikes.
However, dirt biking was *FUN*. I intend to buy another one one day, strictly for use on my land and the surrounding forest. I figure riding off-road might give me scrapes and bruises, but it probably won't get me killed.

Me too. Thats why I am selling my beast, It isn't fast like those things BUT fast enough for its weight to scare the chit out of me anymore. Once you hit the gas and get all that inertia going, it is hard to stop. Heck I can gas it, let off the gas and shift and it will pull the front well off the ground........Scary fast.
When I first bought it, I pulled into get some gas, got back on the freeway and I was doing 124MPH on the on ramp, and I realized I was in 4th gear. Heck I had another gear to go. I have had that beast up to 147 MPH and it had more, I DIDN'T. lool
Went to visit a friend in Idaho and we was riding and I gassed it and a flock of lil black birds flew out in front of me. One hit my left mirror and vaporized. I was cover with bird blood all over me. I was only doing 137MPH....
