NFL shoots itself in foot, has to fine players for 9/11 cleats
The NFL set the precedent; if you mess with your cleats, it'll cost you. Those are the rules, they said, and they are unflinching. There's no room for negotiation or interpretation. So now, this league — the same one that aligns itself with the military at every opportunity, especially when it's nonsensical — has to take one on the chin. People are going to be angry about this.
On some level, it makes sense for the league; now, they're triple-justified to fine players for cleat messages. Still, there's irony here for a couple different reasons; the first is that the NFL, by virtue of its own longstanding obsession with brand control, has done damage to the brand. Football is America. Football is the military.
