The knee-benders, Professor. Mr. Adams was being beneficent in wishing that those who chose tranquil servitude over contentious freedom would ultimately find that their bad decision would not be too personally harmful for them. Although, he then finished the theme by slamming the door when he asked that posterity forget that the knee-benders were ever fellow countrymen.

I usually 'get' it - but that one left me confused about where he was really coming from ....

Ok - who are the ones upon which the '... may the chains set lightly upon you, ..." ?

Those that are kneeling - or those that are standing ?

The picture shouts that it is the latter, but acknowledges the NFL is toast .... because so many love wealth better than liberty ?
