Dear DAD,

you as a parent have a child who is growing into a young man. It's a transition in parenthood that will bring you all great joy and at times will try your soul.

They become young adults and those formative years provided the BASE from which those roots can hold fast and derive strength from while he climbs and grows into the young man he will become.

My daughter left home and went to College as a double major on the Presidents scholarship, stayed at the Honor students dorm, graduated salutatorian of her class and Summa Cum Laude in BOTH Majors. She had more gold roping on her than Fort Knox.

She never came back home..

She left there and went to COlonial Williamsburg to start on her Law Degree at William and Mary, George Wythe College of Law where she graduated second in her class there and won a national law competition and caused a law in Virginia to be changed due to her work...

That is in Law Review..

The point is that Joey is growing up and these years will will go by quickly. You and yours laid a solid foundation. Now all you can do is encourage and try to be there whenever he reaches out.

He is a talented and exceptional youngster. He will be an asset to anywhere he ultimately winds up. Our nation could use a bunch like Joey.

Enjoy these times while you can De and savor every moment because they will be over before you know it.

My very best to your gifted son and wishing him great success in whatever and where ever he is lead to do or go.. He will be just fine...

My best,

micro... Thumbs Up

re: "Hope Joey is doing well in his new home away from home.... "

Thank you. I appreciate that. Actually, there's one class where he's struggling. He's among the worst in the class, as he puts it.

It's his class in conducting - the class where the instructor said at the start that first year students are almost never let in. The prof told him last week, "I know you're a First Year (which is what UVA calls its Freshmen), but this is a 4000-series class (for 4th year music majors) and I'm not going to hold you to a different standard than anyone else just because you're younger."

That had to be humbling!

The problem is apparently with nerves... specifically, nerves when he's conducting all of the other students, all but one of whom are Music Majors (which he ain't) and all of whom are considerably older. He says that he's beginning to loosen up and is beginning to improve. Fortunately, there is more to the class than just standing and waving a baton around, and he's apparently doing fine in those parts of the class. We'll know more when the class is done.

In all his other classes - "a Survey of Algebra," "Introduction to Linguistics," Japanese, his "Mindfulness" COLA class, and two choir ensembles, 19 credits in all - he's at or near 100% of the possible points across the board. So, no worries. I'm actually happy he's taking something that's challenging him. People grow when they're pushed.
