Catalan Government: 90 Percent Voted to Leave Spain
Catalan leaders claimed Sunday that 90 percent of votes in an independence referendum support the region breaking away from Spain. They said around 2.26 million people cast ballots, marking a 42 percent voting turnout. The Spanish government, which previously declared the vote unconstitutional, sent police to disrupt voting with batons and rubber bullets. Police stormed a polling place and injured more than 800 people. According to Reuters, the officers broke glass windows as voters sang the Catalan anthem with their fists raised. Separately, police reportedly used rubber bullets in central Barcelona.
