The Bill of Rights was ratified in 1791. We didn't at the time have the interchange ability for parts and there were no rapid fire guns available. The Founders had no idea about skyscrapers, the chemistry of high powered gunpowder or the ability of an individual to obtain an arsenal in a multitude of states by simply driving an internal combustion machine on concrete roads. The population was less than 4 million people and the overwhelming majority of people lived on the land and used a long rifle to obtain the protein necessary to exist. We had no standing Army to speak of and we depended upon a well regulated militia to defend the Nation.
How this morphs into the right to own an M-16 eludes me entirely. You can teach an imbecile to blow somebodies head off at 1/4 of a mile with an M-16 in half an hour.
As long as we permit the gun lobby to turn Congress into a firearm bordello we will continue to pay the price in blood.
