I suspect,
that the taste of 'jet fuel' on the meat may be from
where the 'cook' wasn't getting enough heat, so
he/she/it proceeded to squirt lighter fluid on the
coals to get them fired up.
My little brother told me a story, where his neighbor
borrowed his charcoal grill . .. . and was taking
forever to get his food cooked. Brother went over
after neighbor was finished and cooked up his steak
in not very long.
Yeah, one needs to start the charcoal a fair amount of
time before one wants to start cooking.
True story.
On one of those West Virginia family vacations which
last a week, GirlFriend had been cooking over a charcoal
fire every night . . . we came back from the days activities
and she said 'Start the charcoal'. I told her it was gonna
rain . . . she told me it was not.
I figured the loss of some charcoal and lighter
was worth the price for harmony . . . so I started the
charcoal.
Of course, it started to rain. Next thing I knew
GirlFriend and one of my nieces were out there cooking
over the charcoals under umbrellas.
It was a good vacation. So was dinner that night.

Lots of folks do like charcoal so I kinda think it is a personal thing. I personally cannot tolerate the taste of charcoal on my meat. I will be up sick all night
...for those who like the charcoal taste, it can be duplicated by marinating the meat in jet fuel for a couple of hours.
