A Facebook friend complained last night about her racing heartbeat. I told her about stimulating the vagus nerve - which often quickly returns it to normal.

The woman has a history of letting her medical problems get out of hand. I think she's got serious financial difficulties and is reluctant to see a doctor. A while ago, she waited too long on a tooth infection and it almost killed her. When she finally saw a dentist and they pulled the tooth, her jaw seized up and she couldn't open her mouth for the next two months. It's terrible, really. If she'd just told me earlier, I'd have given her the money for the dentist.

This morning she got back to me about the heartbeat and I sent her an article on two techniques (dipping the face into ice water, and "bearing down" on the chest while holding one's breath.) Hopefully one will work for her. I also advised her to get to Emergency if neither works - as an eratic or accelerated heartbeat is life threatening.

In response to the article, she just horrified me by writing:

That would be great. I've tried breathing slow and it's worked up until now. Found out recently I've got some health issues including an enlarged heart. Have an apt with a cardiologist and pulmonologist on the 6th

Yikes. This woman went to my elementary school. She's about two years older than me. She spoke of her enlarged heart so casually that I suspect she doesn't even realize how how serious the condition is. (An enlarged heart often leads to Congestive Heart Failure, which has a 50% mortality rate in two years, and another 50% in the next two years, etc. Almost no one lives with it for a decade. And it leads to or is symptomatic of hardened arteries... causing heart attacks, embolisms and a host of other problems.)

This is really sad. She might have five years left. Ironically, I came to know her after she reached out to me for help in tracking down her long-lost neighbors from childhood. (I'm pretty good at tracking things down on the internet. And yes, I found some of them for her.) "Tina" is the only one of her siblings still alive, and her parents and grandparents are all gone as well.

And now this. The poor woman.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months
