Hyup - they sure can. Got attacked once by a colony in a rolled up used carpet. Was backing off as soon as I saw them, but they nailed me in both ankles. Had white socks, with yellow and red stripes. All the hits were in the red stripes. Much more painful than honeybee stings.

There is even a brand of bumblebees that have leftist politics. Section on 'cuckoo bumblebees' in wikipedia:

I didn't know bumblebees could sting again, like wasps. Maybe that helps explain micro's desire to kill the poor things, so needed for pollination. :o)
