Below are some comments sent to me by a friend back east who used to be part of Army Intelligence and has since retired some 20 years ago or so. Anyway, he's been sharing stuff with me for some time and I thought this item would be of interest to others.
As you know, there are major efforts underway to discredit the Russian investigation and the now infamous “dossier.” It is somewhat amusing that the Conservatives actually started funding the project that led to the dossier. I suspect they were either trying to determine what risk they had with Trump the candidate or if they could discredit him, but they were overtaken by events and realized it was no longer in their political interest to pursue the project.
It is somewhat ironic that without the initial Conservative funding the dossier would never have existed, but when the Rs dropped it the Ds were approached and they picked it up as opposition research. The incredible reality is that Conservatives have been funding much nastier opposition research pieces for over a decade and it has spawned an entire industry of anti-Clinton and Obama books, web sites like InfoWars and lots of propaganda emails. What makes the dossier different is that the professional spy/investigator did a very deep investigation and, other than the most salacious sex stuff about Trump (which may be valid), the findings have largely been independently verified. That is the real problem Trump and the Conservatives are facing. The Special Council has found the dossier a valid investigative track and ultimately Trump's goose will be cooked unless he can derail the process.
He and the hardline Conservatives are using all their power and resources to cover up and distract from the legitimate investigation. They will fail; however, the Conservatives will ignore facts and cling to any prospect that enables them to close their ears and minds. Propaganda and dog whistles do that.
