Prosecutors: Manafort Has Multiple Passports, Used Alias
Paul Manafort has three U.S. passports and has submitted 10 passport applications in recent years, according to court documents filed Tuesday that explain why President Trump’s former campaign chairman should be considered a flight risk.
Prosecutors say each of Manafort’s passports has been registered under a different number, and they describe his abundance of passports as “indicative of his travel schedule,” according to documents published by CNN.
Manafort, who along with business partner Rick Gates faces charges of money laundering and conspiracy against the U.S., has also traveled overseas under an alias, prosecutors say. In March, Manafort used a fake name to register a phone and email account that he later used in Mexico, China, and Ecuador, according to court filings. Prosecutors say Gates and Manafort’s “history of deception” and the “weight of the evidence against them” highlights the need for close monitoring while they are under house arrest.
