Micro, that's a lot of driving! I didn't know there were states with a 70 mph speed limit. I wish they would do that on the Jersey TPK. at night. They post the speed limit on electronic signs, so why not give us a break. These long trips take forever and my car feels like it's going 40 at 65. And it's counter-intuitive, but I seem to be getting higher mpg at higher speeds, too.
I was driving home from an event on LI Sat. night around 11 PM and found myself in a similar situation on the parkway. Three lanes, fair number of cars, although fairly light for LI, and they were all passing me. So I did a test. I plopped myself in the left lane and set the cruise control to 70. Pretty soon, they were all out of sight! Can't imagine how fast they were going. My conclusion is the speed limits are way too low on highways. The difference between my experience on LI and I-95 is they were tail gating me at high speed on I-95, but the drivers on LI just pass you and there's no stress. Still, relative speed is important.
I hear you on feeling guilty. I wouldn't feel guilty if they crashed from their own stupidity. But remember ribit's list of most frequent causes of crashes? Lane changes is right up there. Slow drivers should stay to the right so people don't need to pass them, especially on a two lane road.
I agree with you on slow-poke, I just felt like one going 65 with everyone else going a whole lot faster. Does bother me when they tail gate, too. I try and avoid them being behind me, within reason.
I do less than 7,000 miles/year, btw. Works out well, since there are reduced insurance rates at less than 7,500 miles/yr.
Nope, not familiar with Claire Booth Luce. . . .
