Alpha Centauri is 4.4 light years away. If one traveled at the speed of light, it would take 4.4 years. Of course, the acceleration needed to get the ship up to speed in a reasonable time would reduce a passenger to a thimbleful of mushed atoms, but I won't go into that.

IN order to get there in 40 years one would need to travel at over 100 times the speed of light......
