This is exactly the sort of thing the new law in California is trying to prevent, absurd situations where people's lives could be ruined for no good reason:

Less Than 1 Ounce Of Marijuana Leads To Arrests Of More Than 60 Georgia Partygoers

After no one admitted to owning the stash, police hauled in dozens of people because the pot was “within everyone’s reach or control.”

BTW, the voter-approved initiative, Prop 64, which legalized recreational pot in California, did more than just make it legal (at least at the state level), it also made it possible to go back an undo some of the collateral damage done by the so-called 'war on drugs' which has destroyed so many lives:

California’s Marijuana Legalization Aims To Repair Damage From The War On Drugs

It didn’t just legalize weed, the state also enacted one of the most progressive criminal justice reforms in the country.
