Foot thick walls have windows and doors
built into them. Then there is a second
window on the outside to keep the cold
out. (I own an old ice house that requires
little heating or cooling. My mother made
donuts in it).

Re: “maybe you should build it with cement
walls that are a foot thick.”

LOL. Good one.

It occurred to me that once the Trombe wall is built, it will be impossible to access the space between it and the windows. How, then, will I replace the windows if one ever breaks?

I talked to my builder and asked him if the windows could be installed to be replaceable from the outside. He said no. Then he said that if the windows were mounted onto the house from the outside, a burglar could just remove the windows and get in.

Ha. I don't think he quite gets the concept. A burglar who took the time to remove one of my Trombe wall windows would then find himself staring at a foot thick wall of concrete!

I've got plenty of time to discuss the house with my builder. He'll come around...
