Not exactly. The BTK Killer was communicating with the police - sending them letters. They convinced him to send them a floppy disk. He did, with a Word document on it.
Right-Click on a Word document on your PC. Then select Properties. Then open the Details tab. You'll likely see a screen that looks like this:
I didn't ever tell that document that my name was Decomposed. Rather, I gave my computer that name when it was brand new. I didn't give it much other information, but MOST people do! That information gets written as metadata into almost every document the computer creates.
If you try this yourself, you might be surprised how much personal information you're unintentionally providing.
In BTK's case, he was using a church computer since that's where he worked or volunteered. He sent the police a document that had the name of his church in it. From there, catching him was child's play.
