This is amazing; Prior to 1942 Blacks couldn't even donate blood to the Red Cross and once they started, it wasn't until 1950 that they stopped noting the race of the donor on the package of blood...
...so that it would only be used on persons of the same race, and it took another 20+ years before this practice was halted in certain Southern state blood programs:
