Yeah, Charles De Gaulle was an ass-wipe. It would have served him right if the U.S. had taken in all of the U.S. dollars he wanted to exchange for gold and said to him, "Thanks, Chuckles ... these pallets full of dollars will make a nice, first down payment on what France owes us for saving your worthless ass in World War II.

It was a combination of Woodrow Wilson, FDR and Richard Nixon. I assign most of the blame to Wilson. He's the one who set the stage for what FDR later did. When Nixon took office, the United States had already printed dollars far beyond what it could back. France knew this and was actively cashing in dollars for underpriced U.S. gold. Nixon, realizing that we would soon run out of gold if France persisted, did the only thing he could given the untenable situation he'd inherited.
