One of the most solemn obligations of our federal government is to conduct a fair and accurate count of all the people in America. This obligation is written right into the Constitution.

But to have an accurate Census, people need to know that the stranger knocking on their door is not out to hurt them, their family, or community.

President Trump's reckless move to demand citizenship status in the 2020 Census would destroy that trust. If fewer people participate in the Census, then our representation in Congress and the Electoral College will be jeopardized -- along with billions of dollars in federal funds on which families across New York rely.

Today, I announced that I will lead a multistate lawsuit to stop it from happening.
