Re: “GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT Decomp! ”
Aw, shucks. 'Tain't nothin. I'm sure zzfart is living the life he wants too. Burger flipping fulfills him. He just doesn't understand that some people want to do something else with their lives.
In all seriousness, I consider myself very fortunate. I've known too many people over the years who died on the job or shortly after they left. Car accidents, strokes, lung cancer, emphysema, heart attacks... took down some of my good friends when they were far too young. A woman I knew very well retired a couple of years after her only son was murdered. (He was held up as he sat in his car, after having withdrawn money from an ATM. He sped down the road and crashed. Police thought the accident killed him until they found a bullet hole in his armpit. The case was never solved.) She's retired now but in a tragically broken way.
I decided long ago that I wanted to retire while still young enough to enjoy myself. Then I figured out what it was I wanted and was lucky enough to make it happen. This last third or so of life SHOULD be everyone's best years, wouldn't you agree? But for too many, they aren't.
You've summarized my situation well: I'm retiring to live the life I want. Everyone should be able to do that, but I know too well that most never do. What a shame that is.
Thank you for a wonderful eulogy. But lest anyone get the wrong idea, I'm not dead yet! I'll stick my neck in at AtomicBobs every now and then. I'm sure I'll have a ton of pictures from places and projects, too. It's going to be a lot of fun. Watch a few episodes of 'Green Acres.' That'll be me one day, up there on a telephone pole or trapped in the collapsed basement with only wombats and hornets for company.
Everyone should have it so good.
