The U.S. Attorney, even if it's from the Southern District of New York, is still federal. The New York Attorney General would have to intercede and I'm not sure there's anything there for the State to prosecute him on since any election finance violation would be federal anyway.

Which means if he's found guilty in state court, Trump can't pardon him.

Stephen Ryan, a lawyer for Cohen, said the US Attorney's office for the Southern District of New York had executed "a series of search warrants and seized the privileged communications" between Cohen and his clients, according to the Times.
