My wife tells me that the 21-year-old woman we had the accident with was not insured with GEICO after all.

Our insurance company called my wife and asked her to obtain a quote for repairs. When it came in at $1,700, they stated that our minivan is a loss (i.e. it's totaled.) Its Blue Book value is just $1,200 and they are therefore cutting us a check for $1,000. The $200 difference is the deductible we have on our UNINSURED MOTORIST COVERAGE.

It's a good thing we have that or we'd be getting nothing. $1,000, though, sure isn't a lot of money. However, in going this route, I think we're going to be able to keep the van. The title will identify it as a salvage. We might have to buy the totaled minivan from our insurance company since I think they might own it if they pay it's entire value to us. I'll know more in a few days.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

I think comparing rates is always prudent.

What also is prudent, a good lesson for people to learn, is to actually understand fully what all those different listings on the insurance quote really mean and whatthey actually do.

THEN, make adjustments to actually put together an insurance plan that actually will protect YOU from what most people think will never happen to themselves.

A couple of small examples.

GET an UMBRELLA liability policy with a million dollars of coverage so if someone sues you for injuries or an accident, you have plenty of protection.

Does this cost more than bare bones coverage? YES.

But it beats being bankrupted by an accident.

Another simple thing.

MEDICAL PAYMENTS.

This isn't the "to others" medical payments.
Every policy has a place for this and every insurer has a standard amount of $1,000. coverage listed there.

WHAT EXACTLY is this ????

Say you are involved in an accident. It IS your fault.

AND, YOU are injured some way so that you need to go to medical facility and have tests, scans, images, maybe a cast or God forbid something worse....

WHO pays for that???

THIS is where that little "medical payments" section comes into play. THIS is the money YOUR insurance policy has to cover YOUR medical bills caused in an accident. And better than medical insurance because it is FIRST DOLLAR COVERAGE, meaning NO DEDUCTIBLES or CO-Insurances or co-pays.
SO, for a little more money a year, you can increase this number to say $25,000 instead of $1,000 and now you have some real cash to help cover medical expenses that could well come up as a result from an accident..

And, do not forget, los of drivers out there without ANY insurance so YOUR insurance will foot that repair bill and medical expense if one of those hits you...

I always like to know I am not being gouged for car insurance or home owners. I also want to deal with a reputable company whose claims process is really easy.

NOT ALL of them are the same. I have found one now and had to use it a couple years back, that I really like and will stick with as long as they don;t get out of line.

Metropolitan Life. MetLife. You know, Snoopy???

Seamless.
These add ons will increase your costs of coverage BUT if you ever need them, they will pay for themselves many times over immediately and save you from financial disaster...

Just a little commentary to go with the good suggestion to compare.....
