Report: U.S. Paid $60M to Cover Claims Against Border Patrol

The U.S. government has paid out more than $60 million in legal settlements after deaths, alleged assaults, and wrongful detentions involving Border Patrol agents over the past decade, The Guardian reports.

The settlements include at least 20 wrongful-death claims, more than 1,000 payments made to cover damage from reckless driving by border agents, and settlements for four people who were mistakenly deported.

More than $650,000 was also paid out in settlements in four cases in which four people were shot by border agents and survived, and $6 million paid out in settlements involving non-deadly force and civil-rights violations, including lawsuits from men and women who say they were racially profiled. Over the 12 years that were studied, the Treasury Department cut a check to settle a claim against CBP every 32 hours on average.
