Re: “I prefer the old fashioned method. Go to store and buy packets of seeds. Let someone else go to all this trouble... ”

If you have a plant that you really like, it's nice to be able to grow it again next year, and the year after that, in perpetuity.

This year, most of my garden is from Burpee. Surprisingly, the Burpee tomato packets (and some of the other seed packets too) say "Heirlom" on the backs, so I assume that growing them again by myself will be no problem.

A couple of years ago, a friend I worked with gave me a couple of his tomatoes. He's a gentleman farmer like I want to be. I asked him if they were Heirloom tomatoes and he assured me that they were. So instead of eating them, I threw them in my freezer.

Here it is, two years later, and I thawed one of the tomatoes and planted seeds in a few places. Would you believe that those two-year-old seeds are out-doing both the Burpee tomato seeds AND the 6-pack of foot-tall tomato plants I bought at a local store? My friend's plants are growing more rapidly and appear to be much more robust (based on the stalk width.)

I'll send him photos when they start producing. I think he'll get a kick out of them since it will be obvious that they're his. These are very distinctive looking tomatoes - they're dark near the stem. I'll post pics here, too.

My zucchini have begun to flower. That probably means that I'll have squash in a couple of weeks. The lettuce and radishes (of course) are ready now.

Unfortunately, even though the garden was nice to begin with and has very clear borders, it's been overrun by uninvited and unwelcome migrants (weeds). I've tried to get rid of them, but it's not easy. I almost think that the crazy woman next door is ORGANIZING them, teaching them how to respond no matter what I do. She lacks the motivation to garden for herself you see, and thinks everyone should be dependent like she is on Big Government. Sad.

I already find this to be a royal PIA and do not have that kind of patience or time..

I prefer the old fashioned method. Go to store and buy packets of seeds. Let someone else go to all this trouble...

I know, I am not much of survivalist but then again, I don't want to be.
