Looks like a percussion cap pistol to me. The black powder goes down the barrel followed by the wad and ball. The percussion cap goes on the nipple underneath the hammer, which, when fired, hits the percussion cap, which, in turn, ignites the black powder. In effect, the percussion cap is your primer.
