is to isolate and define the sort of Americans that are toxic to the whole world.

I used to believe Americans were fundamentally decent people and that there was simply a minority, maybe a quarter, of nuts.

But there are too many of the other sort for me to conclude this any more. The rubes and the nuts joined forces and made a joint enterprise. Maybe they should be called the rubenuts.
