I don't think it's that so much as that today, nearly all of the media is owned by one of six entities, and they often operate in cahoots with one another to achieve their owners' political ends. There used to be enormous diversity in political reporting, including different stories and different takes on the same stories. Not so today.

...when the constitution was written it was assumed that the press was more or less honest and that government would be more or less corrupt. Freedom of the press was meant to keep the people informed as to the truth of what was going on and that the government would be trying to cover it up. Nowdays the press is the lapdog of the democrat / liberal establishment and believes that the truth is whatever they write. Not because it is true, but because they write it.
