Kofi Annan, former head of the United Nations and one of the world's most celebrated diplomats, dies at 80

Kofi Annan, the former United Nations secretary general and Nobel Peace Prize winner, has died, his family and foundation confirmed. He was 80. A statement from the foundation said Annan passed away peacefully on Saturday after a short illness.

"Kofi Annan was a guiding force for good," said the U.N.'s current secretary general, AntÃ³nio Guterres. "In many ways, Kofi Annan was the United Nations."
